Qu'est ce que le jagua ?

What is jagua?

At Inka Paris, we are passionate about the art of temporary tattoos and have chosen to use jagua, a natural product that allows us to create beautiful, temporary designs on the skin. But what exactly is jagua? Where does it come from? How does it work? Let's dive together into the fascinating world of jagua.

The Jagua Fruit

Jagua comes from the fruit of the Genipa americana tree. This fruit has an average length of 10 to 12 cm and weighs about 200 to 500 grams. It is oval in shape and has a thick green skin. Inside, the pulp is juicy and white to beige in color.

Although edible, the jagua fruit is primarily used for its coloring properties. The fruit's pulp contains compounds that, when they come into contact with the skin and air, produce a blue-black coloration that can last up to two weeks. In addition to body dye, jagua is also used in certain culinary preparations and for its traditional medicinal virtues.

The Genipa Americana tree

The Genipa americana tree, also called jagua or genipap, grows mainly in the rainforests of Central and South America. It can reach a height of 15 to 30 meters, resembling certain European trees like the oak in terms of size and structure.

The fruits are harvested directly from the tree when they are ripe. In Europe, this tree is rare and only grows in very specific climates similar to those of its native regions, namely hot and humid ones.

The tradition of the Jagua tattoo

Jagua tattoos have a long tradition among the indigenous peoples of South America, particularly tribes living in the Amazon. These tattoos are used in ritual ceremonies and as symbols of protection or social status. The earliest uses date back several centuries.

To prepare jagua ink, the fruit pulp is mixed with other natural ingredients. The mixture is then applied to the skin using fine brushes or other traditional tattooing tools. Once dry, the pulp is removed, leaving a temporary blue-black pattern that intensifies within a few hours.
